On behalf of Chief Michael Murphy, the Barrington Hills Police Department would like to inform you of an attempted burglary which occurred last night, Friday March 30th, in the area of Rolling Hills Drive and Long Meadow Drive. Forced entry to the home was attempted through a basement window and it is believed that the offender was deterred by the activation of the home’s alarm system.

Surveillance video captured images of a dark-colored, four-door sedan driving past the residence twice before the alarm activation and also revealed a lone offender dressed in dark clothing, wearing a ski mask, and carrying a pry bar and flashlight.

The Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident and asks anyone with information to contact the Department’s Investigations Division at 847-551-3006. Any suspicious persons or vehicles should be immediately reported by dialing 911.

The Police Department strongly encourages residents to lock all doors and windows when not home and at night. The use of an alarm system with wireless backup is also highly recommended, whether home or not.

In response to this incident and prior, the Department will be increasing patrols throughout the Village.

Spring Break Reminder – March 22, 2012

On behalf of Chief Michael Murphy of the Barrington Hills Police Department, we would like to provide you with several tips to protect you and your home while traveling this spring.

Spring Break is a popular time of year when many families go on vacation. It is also the time of year when burglars become more active. By taking proper prevention measures, you will reduce the chance of you or your home becoming a target of a crime.

The Barrington Hills Police Department recommends that you lock all doors and windows and utilize your alarm system when not home. Ensure that your alarm system is working and has a back-up system. Have a trusted neighbor or friend check on your home or utilize a house sitter while away.

We highly recommend notifying the police department of your absence and utilize the Police Department’s House Watch Program.

Do not leave lights on in your home 24 hours a day, but rather utilize random timers to turn lights on and off, in order to maintain a lived-in look. We recommend that valuable items such as jewelry or cash be removed from the home and placed in a safety deposit box, or with a trusted friend or relative.

We also recommend you stop all newspapers and mail service while traveling to avoid newspapers piling up on the driveway, leaving the appearance no one is home. Do not publish your vacation or leave unavailability messages on your voicemail or email.

As always, please dial 911 immediately to report any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area. For more information, on how you can better protect yourself and your home, please feel free to contact the Barrington Hills Police Department, at 847-551-3006. We wish you a safe and happy spring.
